Tax refund email linked to a scam

HONOLULU (KHNL) - The State Department of Taxation in Hawaii is issuing a warning to taxpayers of a fraudulent e-mail linked to a scam.

The fraudulent e-mail claiming to be from the State of Hawaii Department of Taxation is informing taxpayers that they have a tax refund.

In order for the recipient to receive the refund the email asks them to go to a website that looks exactly like the State's web site.

Once at the fraudulent website the recipient is then asked to submit confidential information such as their social security number, debit card number and PIN as well as the card's security code.

This is a scam and anyone who receives such an email should not reply.

The Department of Taxation does not send taxpayers emails regarding tax refunds.

Its website does allow taxpayers to check on the status of their refunds: however it does not ask for taxpayers debit card information.

Anyone receiving such an email should report it immediately to the Department of Taxation 587-1540.
