Water will continue to flow on Molokai

HONOLULU (KHNL) -The Hawaii State Department of Health, Monday issued Emergency Orders to Molokai Properties, Limited requiring the company and its three subsidiary utilities to continue drinking water and waste water services for Molokai residents for at least the next 90 days.

"The Department of Health is exercising its authority to order immediate action to protect the public health from an imminent and substantial danger if the services are stopped, "said Laurence Lau, DOH deputy director for environmental health.

Emergency Orders were also released to Maui County to assess what is needed to provide drinking water and wastewater systems if and when Molokai Properties ceases operations of the systems.

"Our priority is to ensure uninterrupted water and wastewater service for the health and safety of the people of Molokai," said Governor Linda Lingle. "While the county haws the primary responsibility to operate and maintain public utilities, the State is prepared to assist the county."

A hearing on the orders is scheduled at 9:00am Tuesday, July,22 in the DOH Environmental Management Division conference room. The conference will address the issues raised by the DOH's orders.
