HALAWA (KHNL) - Their tradition is built on winning. And for newly named St. Louis head football coach John Hao, he has some big shoes to fill.
However, he already has the support of one of the school's most successful coaches - current UH defensive coordinator Cal Lee, who coached Hao almost 20 years ago.
He played for UH in the mid 90's.
But that's not the Alma Mater John Hao is returning to coach. Instead, Hao's returning to St. Louis, where he played for one of the Crusaders greatest coaches who believes Hao has what it takes.
"John Hao's a winner," said Lee. "He led us to the Prep Bowl and eventually winning the Prep Bowl and I'll always remember that because his supporting class was a young set of guys, and with his leadership he took us to the promised land."
Lee says he can't predict whether or not St. Louis will be champions at the end of the year, but he does give this piece of advice to the team.
"All you have to do is do the things you think you need to do and you take one game at a time, don't try win the championship on the first game, and you go on take it slow and you see what happens at the end of the season."
As for the pressure Hao might feel to continue the Crusaders success, Lee knows St. Louis wouldn't name Hao coach if they didn't think he could succeed in helping the program, and the young men.
"They have the utmost respect for the program and what it means and what they need to accomplish. There's nothing wrong with continuing that tradition, because it's about excellence, not only in the classroom, but on the field as well."
Lee also says he couldn't be happier for John Hao, and wishes him the best of luck.
