Hana Highway to get $3 million improvements

EAST MAUI (KHNL) - Hana Highway will be getting a $3 million traffic and safety improvement.

Governor Linda Lingle released $3,565,000 for construction on two locations on the highway.

Lingle says the projects will benefit Maui drivers and allow for faster and safer commutes.

The Hana and Haleakala Highway intersection will receive traffic improvements.  The project will alleviate traffic on Hana Highway in the west and eastbound directions during morning and afternoon peak hours.  Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2009 and be completed in December 2010.

Hana Highway between Uakea Road and Keawa Place in the Hana Historic District will receive construction improvements to improve driver safety.  The project involves extending culverts at two locations, widening the roadway from one to two lanes and paving the shoulders between Kauiki Street and Paani Park to provide a pedestrian path.  Construction will begin August 2008 and be completed in November 2008.
