MAKAWAO, Maui (KHNL) - The 53rd annual Makawao Paniolo Rodeo and Parade in Maui was an event that combined both American and Hawaiian culture together for a rip roaring Fourth of July weekend.
Thousands of people gathered for the scheduled events like Friday night's bull bash where bare back bronc riders held on tight to the bucking horses and bulls.
Cowboy, Henry Muragin of the Big Island was the biggest winner making him Best All Round Cowboy.
Samantha Wilson of Maui took the honor of Best All Round Cowgirl. Even though it rained the frontier festivities continued without a hitch.
The Makawao Rodeo marked the 100th anniversary of the Hawaiian Paniolos win of the Frontier Days Rodeo in Wyoming in 1908. The Paniolos took home first prize, and their very own Ikua Purdy was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame.
The annual event also included a now world famous parade made up of paniolos from all across the state. Pa'u riders in full costume with lei draped over their shoulders created a beautiful sight against the background of upcountry Maui.
