LIHUE, Kauai (KHNL) -  In a closed meeting Monday, the seven member Kauai County Council voted unanimously for Council Chairman Kaipo Asing to fill the vacant position of Mayor of Kauai.

The mayoral position became vacant after the sudden passing of Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste on June 22, 2008.

Chairman Asing is not officially mayor until he takes the oath, that time is still yet to be announced. Once the oath is taken he will be the designated mayor until a special election is held September 20, 2008.

If during the September election the leading candidate does not take at least 50% of the votes for the candidacy a second election will be held during the General Election on November 4, 2008.

Currently Chairman Asing is in the process of changing offices.
