HONOLULU (KHNL) - Congresswoman Mazie Hirono is back safely in the islands after returning from an almost week long visit to Iraq.Once through customs at Honolulu Airport, Congresswoman Hirono met up with the local media to discuss her feelings about the trip.
"I want to thank the troops, because we had a lot of military people working on our visit," she said.
"Iraq is not a safe place by any means," she added, noting that while in Iraq she had to wear a protective jacket everywhere she went.
But if anything in Iraq stood out in the Congresswoman's mind it was the U.S. Military stationed there.
"All of the soldiers we met with, our troops, everywhere were outstanding," she said."They are doing the job that we asked them to do, and I want to acknowledge that and thank them."
A second cousin to Hirono, Lt. Commander Mike Itakura also had a chance to visit the Congresswoman in Baghdad, where he is stationed until April 2009.
