HONOLULU (KHNL)-- Their motto is "where strength, talent and discipline unite." But this isn't your average team we're talking about. This is a team of two, who went from mixed martial arts fans, to MMA publishers.
"I gotta say, it's the nuttiest thing we've ever done before especially as a couple being together you know," said co-publisher Hanalei Jaber.
Their business idea began like many. They saw a problem that they thought needed fixing.
"There was actually a championship bout that EliteXC and Icon put on and I wanted to find out who was in the bout and what the fighters were all about and who they were and where they train, and I could only find, if any information, was very minimal," said Jaber.
So together, Hanalei and his girlfriend came up with the solution.
"He was a really big fight fan, he kind of dragged me over and made me watch it with the boys so I started to like it, and it kind of went naturally with my major of journalism. So when we combine something we really like and something I was good at, we became this Uproar magazine," said Hanalei's girlfriend and co-publisher Brittany Yap.
The magazine recently unveiled its first issue which includes profiles of local fighters, ring girls, and technique tips for the different styles of fighting. But the couple also wants to educate their readers.
"There's a lot of people who don't understand the sport, they think it's bloody and gory, they don't appreciate the technique that goes into it, so we're trying to educate fans and other mainstream people who aren't into it at all," said Yap.
A magazine isn't the only thing MMA's given this couple, it's also made them closer.
"You know it's a big chance to work with your other half, because it can make or break your relationship, and for us it's made us stronger so i'm very happy in that sense," said Yap.
Hanalei and Brittany plan to begin slow, releasing the magazine on a quarterly basis, but they already have plans in place to grow their business and cover fighters and training centers across the state.
