Maui recognized as Preserve America community

KIHEI, Maui (KHNL) - Out of our Earth and Sea file - a special recognition was given to the Valley Isle from the White House .

Maui has been named a "Preserve America" community.

It's an honor designed to encourage efforts to preserve America's cultural and natural heritage.

John Nau III, the co-chair of the Preserve America Initiative and the Chair of the advisory council of Historic Preservation said, "There are few iconic spots in America that deserve preservation just because they are what they are."

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary hosted a ceremony Thursday morning in Kihei, just above the Koieie Loko la Fishpond, which was built in the 1600's.

Attendees hope this designation helps efforts to protect Maui's natural resources.
