Kauai's emergency homeless shelter gets new kitchen

HONOLULU (KHNL) - The Manaolana emergency homeless shelter on Kauai will get a new certified kitchen.

The Kauai Economic Opportunity will use a $73,000 grant, released by Governor Linda Lingle, to renovate space for a new kitchen to provide meals to people staying at the shelter.

The kitchen will also provide opportunities to train people in food preparation.

Governor Lingle says in addition to providing a safe place, meals and social services, the shelter offers "hope for Kauai families who are trying to turn their lives around and move toward more permanent housing."

The shelter opened in November 2007.
