HONOLULU (KHNL) - A man suspected of being the leader of a copper theft ring appeared before an Oahu judge Tuesday.

James Taylor, Jr., 43, is charged with copper theft and criminal property damage. His bail is set at $25,000.

Sheriffs say they were staking out the H-1 Freeway near the Makakilo off-ramp Sunday, after road crews discovered an electrical box near a light pole was tampered with. They say they later caught Taylor red-handed, stealing about 70 lbs. of copper wiring.

A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday.
