WAILEA, Maui (KHNL) - For the first time in almost ten years, all four Maui Film Festival cinemas, Celestial Cinema, SandDance Theater, Maui SkyDome and Starlight Cinema, will be powered by the sun.

Maui Film Festival founder Barry Rivers says it is the first step in realizing the festival's goal to have a 100% carbon neutral event.

"Since its inception, the Maui Film Festival has featured nightly pre-film stargazing led by Harriet Witt, the only official film festival astronomer in the known universe," said Rivers.  "And this year, we're stoked beyond words, to also add that the Maui Film Festival now features the only completely solar powered under-the-stars film festival in the known universe as well."

Rising Sun Solar donated the solar system.  Co-owner Brad Albert says he hopes to inspire people to go solar.

"The Maui Film Festival is incredibly effective in how it communicates with all members of our community and brings all kinds of people together," said Albert.  "We are hoping to show people how solar energy can benefit them personally, as well as sustain our island in the coming years."

The Maui Film Festival is held every June and attracts more than 20,000 movie lovers.

The 2008 Maui Film Festival at Wailea takes place June 11-15.
