IHS Implements Program Fees for Shelter Services

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- The Institute for Human Services is implementing a nominal program fee for guests staying longer than 90 days at its emergency shelters.

Starting June 1, all households, single women and families will be required to pay $90 a month.

IHS Executive Director Connie Mitchell says the implementation of the monthly fee is an effort to help guests develop skills that will help them get back on their feet.

"I know it sounds counterintuitive to ask someone who is homeless to pay, but it really works," said Mitchell.  "We are not asking payment of people who come to us in an emergency and have no resources to pay.  So we remain a real safety net for the community."

The IHS says no person will be turned away due to genuine inability to pay.

Guests have been given adequate notice regarding the change in policy.

The policy will intially only apply to the women and families' shelter located at 546 Kaahi Street.  It will be implemented at the men's shelter on 350 Sumner Street later this summer.
