NOAA Awards Funds to Support Ocean Observation

OAHU'S SOUTH SHORE (KHNL) -- The government wants to keep a closer eye on the ocean and Thursday, that effort got a major boost from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

NOAA is giving more than two million dollars to support ocean observation here in Hawaii and across the pacific.

The money will be used to expand a pilot project which focused on Oahu's south shore, and is intended to enhance coastal observations and monitor environmental conditions.

Zdenka Willis, NOAA IOOS program director, says better understanding of our oceans provides better ability to keep our country safe, the economy secure and the environment healthy.

The program and its funding will be directed by researchers at the University of Hawaii.
