Mokulele Highway Widening Project Comes to Completion

KAHULUI (KHNL) -- Motorists traveling between Kahului and South Maui will have an easier drive now that the Mokulele Highway Widening Project is completed.

The $87 million project involved widening the 6.5-mile highway from two lanes to a four-lane divided highway from Puunene Avenue in Kahului to Piilani Highway in Kihei.

A dedication ceremony was held Tuesday to celebrate the completion.

Brennon Morioka, Department of Transportation Director says the project will enhance the overall quality of life for Maui communities.

"Travel times and traffic congestion will be reduced, allowing motorists to spend less time on the road and more time at home with their families," said Morioka.  "Widening Mokulele Highway will also help make moving goods and services more efficient and timely, which ultimately will benefit our economy and everyone's pocketbooks."

Two new traffic signals are now operational at the Mokulele Highway/Piilani Highway intersection and at the North Kihei Road/South Kihei Road intersection.
