Police Prep For Critical Mass Bike Ride

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- Several dozen bicyclists are expected to hit the streets of Downtown Honolulu Friday afternoon.

Police say they'll be monitoring the event, called Critical Mass, to make sure those on bikes and in cars are obeying traffic safety rules. At a previous event, a police officer was accused of tackling a bicyclist.

"I think what did happen is the officer ended up stumbling while he was trying to stop someone," Maj. Clayton Saito, Honolulu Police Department, explained. "And a bicyclist coming up from the back ended up colliding into him."

Critical Mass was first organized as a way to show how unfriendly drivers were to bicyclists. It takes place on the last Friday of each month.
