Men Charged in Deadly Beating Plead Guilty to Lesser Charge

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- Three men accused in a deadly road rage incident in Waianae two years ago pleaded guilty to reduced charges Friday.

Julius Mitchell, Lugavai Momoe and Dillion Lepolo each face up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to assault. They were originally charged with murder.

They admit they beat up a bicyclist in the parking lot of the Waianae Market following a traffic incident. An autopsy found 47-year-old Roger Haudenshild suffered a heart attack and died.

"We though long and hard about what we wanted to do with this case," Landon Murata, deputy prosecutor, said. "We had, the office had several meetings with the community out in Waianae. We had meetings with the medical examiner in this case. And really, the assault (in the first degree) is the fair and just result."

Mitchell faces a mandatory minimum term of three years and four months because of his prior felony convictions.

Sentencing for all three is set for August 13th.
