HONOLULU (KHNL) -- The Environmental Protection Agency honors two Honolulu organizations and a Kaneohe man, for their work to protect and preserve the environment.
Engineer Richard Maruya was recognized for his work in finding a safer hydrocarbon refrigerant.
Base Yard Hawaii and Nanakuli Housing Corporation, received its Environmental Hero Award for distributing surplus reusable construction materials, to native Hawaiian communities on Oahu's Waianae coast.
And the non profit Community Conservation Network is recognized for making great strides in protecting Hawaii's marine environment.
These regional Environmental Hero Awards were selected from more than 130 nominations, covering four western states and the pacific islands.
