HONOLULU (KHNL) -- It's been a rough few weeks for the airport community but Tuesday, there was cause for celebration.
New restaurants opened in the Honolulu International Airport to enhance visitors experience.
Golf aficionados and scotch lovers rest easy tonight. A new bar and grill opens Tuesday and brings a modern approach to layover dining.
Sky Cichoski is a server at Dewars bar and grill.
"You find all kinds of ribs, burgers, you can build your own kind of burgers. Wonderful chicken wings, I love those they are my favorite," he said.
The modernization plan started four years ago and includes new options for food and beverages and new retail shops.
"We're now on our third or fourth store opening and there's a whole slew of them coming on to complete the $22 million program sometime early next year," said Elie Maalouf, President of HMSHost.
It's all part of a project to make the travel experience better for tourists and locals alike.
"The customers here have special needs, they have time constraints which are very pressing. There's different kinds of payment you'll have yen, Canadian dollars, vouchers so have to go the extra mile and meet their needs," said Cichoski.
"Airports and us working with airports have an opportunity to comfort them when they arrive and before they depart with great restaurants, great retail options, with friendly service, with nice interesting products," said Maalouf.
The opening of this Dewar's bar and grill, is only the first of many store openings including an additional Burger King, Cold Stone Creamery and Kona Brew Pub.
