Kirk Lankford Found Guilty of Second-Degree Murder

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- Kirk Lankford has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Japanese visitor Masumi Watanabe.

The verdict came down Monday morning after jury deliberated for a day and a half.

In a trial that lasted about a month, Lankford told the jury it was an accidental death, and not murder.

He said he accidentally struck Watanabe with his work truck.

Lankford said he then gave her a ride, but she jumped out of his vehicle.

He said he tried to cover up her death because of the possibility of losing his pest-control job.

The jury heard from dozens of witnesses and saw more than 100 pieces of evidence.

The jury must return for a hearing on May 27th to decide on the prosecution's request for an extended term of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
