Jury Acquits Man Accused in Burger King Beating Death

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- A man accused of fatally beating a mentally-challenged man at a fast-food restaurant in Waianae last year was cleared of the charges Friday.

Gary Avilez says he acted in self-defense. An Circuit Court jury agreed, and found him not guilty of murder.

Investigators say the 53-year-old was in the restroom at the Waianae Burger King last April, when the victim, who was in the restroom earlier, tried to get in to retrieve his fanny pack. Police accused Avilez of beating 69-year-old Domingo Correa to death.
