Driver Pleads No Contest To Crash That Killed Farmers

By Minna Sugimoto

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- A driver accused of causing a crash that killed four farmers in Kunia two years ago gave up his court fight Thursday.

John Szemkow pleaded no contest to four counts of misdemeanor negligent homicide, and one count of leaving the scene of a crash.

Investigators say he drove his car into on-coming traffic on Kunia Road, causing a pickup filled with farm workers to swerve into a cement truck.

The 48-year-old may ask for a deferral, which gives him a chance to wipe the incident off his record if he stays out of further trouble.

Prosecutors say they'll ask for the maximum 14-year prison term at the sentencing in June.
