Moomomi Man Dies in Apparent Drowning Incident

MOOMOMI BEACH, Molokai (KHNL) -- A 38-year-old Moomomi man died Thursday in an apparent drowning incident.

Molokai police say Christopher Kaawa was picking opihi in the area of the Hanaake seacliffs at about 10:20 a.m. when he was struck by a large wave and was swept out into the open ocean.

Molokai Fire Department Search and Rescue located Kaawa's body at about 11:18 a.m., floating face down, about 30 yards off shore.

Kaawa sustained facial contusions and abrasions to the arms and legs.

He was taken to Molokai General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:32 p.m.

The official cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.
