Something Stinks Here

Thanks to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin's Kokua Line for pointing this one out about three months ago, but did you know that it is against the law to urinate or defecate in a public place- but only between Ward Avenue and Nuuanu Stream, and between the ocean and H-1! Yes, that's right, this special law was passed in 2004- must have been a slow session- as most of the consumer complaints were about unpleasant, odoriferous places in downtown Honolulu, where people are still too often re-defining the concept of "rest" room. This nifty law is on the books through December 31 of next year, so now is the time to start sniffing around the legislature . Talk to your community representative if you want to see the boundaries of this law extended. It is currently a maximum $200 fine or a full 40-hours of community service if you choose to offend with this offensive behavior while in town.

Frankly, I'm not sure why the lawmakers didn't see fit to extend the boundaries on this public nuisance and health hazard- like from Hilo to Barking Sands Beach! Is it just me, or does it seem weird to now know  that you have to control yourself after a concert at the Blaisdell Arena, unless you walk a block toward Pensacola and do your thing privately, but kind of  publicly? No, I wouldn't test the theory... One sensible and good bit of news surrounding this law is that it does not apply to someone who might not be able to get to a restroom due to an existing medical condition. But that would be a heck of a court case- "sorry your honor, I had to go"... and the doctor nods in agreement. I'm sure there are many other scratch-your-head rules and regulations on the local books, but this one needs some fine-tuning by 2010 so we can all have some pees of mind; pardon the pun. Think about it...
