Hawaii, nine other states have clean air

HONOLULU (AP) - Federal officials say only Hawaii and nine states meet the Environmental Protection Agency's new health standard for smog.

The other states are Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Vermont and Wyoming.

The government says the air in hundreds of counties in the other 40 states is simply too dirty to breathe.

Officials have ordered a multibillion-dollar expansion of efforts to clean up smog in cities and towns nationwide.
