MANOA (KHNL) -- In response to a lawsuit filed by a gay couple who was denied family housing at the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus, Francisco Hernandez, Vice Chancellor for Students issued the following statement:

"The lawsuit is surprising and disappointing because UH Mânoa was already working on changing our housing policies to accommodate couples such as the plaintiffs and families in similar situations, and we are in the process of doing so."

Joe O'leary and his long time partner Phi Ngo lived in the family housing complex on campus last year. When they tried to renew, they were denied.

The students say they were denied because of their sexual orientation.
