HONOLULU (KHNL) -- The Waimanalo Gulch Landfill will remain open at least through November of next year.

The State Land Use Commission made the decision ahead of a May 1 deadline which would essentially force the landfill to close.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann says the Commission's decision parallels the idea that the landfill should remain at Waimanalo.

"We will continue to move forward on our plans to make that landfill operation one that is a very open and transparent manner and that the public is well aware of what is going on and to further validate that when it comes to a landfill, that no one wants it in their backyard," said Hannemann.

The Commission is ordering the City to provide updates on its efforts to find alternate ways of disposing of Oahu's waste.

Friday's decision did not affect the City's plan to seek a new permit to expand the landfill so it can remain open longer.
