HONOLULU (KHNL) -- Tony Sellitto returns to Hawaii Pacific University as Head Coach for the Sea Warrior men's basketball team.

Sellitto replaces Darren Vorderbruegge.

Sellitto became HPU's Athletics Director and Head Coach of the men's basketball team in 1988.

During his 14 years at HPU, he led the Sea Warriors to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics seven times and had 12 winning seasons.

The highlight of Sellitto's career came in 1993 when the Sea Warriors won the NAIA national championship and Sellitto was selected as the 1992-93 NAIA National Coach of the Year.

Sellitto battled health problems and retired in 2002 but he stayed close to the local basketball programs.

"I always loved working with young people and helping them succeed as athletes and in life," said Sellitto.  "The opportunity to return to HPU and work again for President Wright and among the great staff, faculty and student body at HPU is something I value greatly."

Now at age 69 and fully recovered from health issues, Sellitto is confident he can return the Sea Warriors to national prominence.
