HONOLULU (KHNL) -- At the world's largest outdoor shopping center, Nordstrom employees are putting the final touches on the their new home.
But they're not the only ones working overtime.
Oh the anticipation.
After more than two years, and many millions of dollars worth of construction, Ala Moana Shopping Center is about to get bigger. Much bigger.
In addition to the 210,000 square feet that make up Nordstrom, another 90,000 square feet of retail space is also coming on line.
"Of the 35 new stores set to open between the main mall and Nordstrom 19 are brand new to Hawaii including "Lululemon Athletica".
A canadian company that sees Hawaii as a perfect fit.
"We've got clothing that is yoga inspired but there's running lines, dance lines, personal trainer lines, it's all highly technical designed by athletes for athletes and it's always built unction first so we're really stoked," said Krishna Chatterjee of Lululemon Athletica.
And so is mall management. The massive expansion project has been on drawing boards for more than a decade.
Since the days of Liberty House and Kapiolani Bakery.
"Nordstrom has been on our hit list for 10 years now," said Matt Derby of the Ala Moana Shopping Center.
"Some merchants you'll find here are first line merchants where you'll find American brands and some new international concept stores. Again it's the mix of stores were adding to the marketplace and it's great."
And despite how things look, Derby says the entire new wing will be ready to welcome shoppers a week from Friday.
"Yes, we definitely will be ready. Friday March 7th is our opening date and everything you see here will be cleaned up, cleaned up with 16 new stores. They have their employees rushing to stock the stores, clean the windows and get everything ready and just flick on the sign and on Friday we'll be open."
Of the three dozen new stores, 16 will be open for business next Friday.
The rest will continue to open up in the coming weeks and months.
