Hilo Woman Dies While in Police Custody

HILO (KHNL) -- A 47-year-old Hilo woman died Wednesday while in police custody.

Police say Ann Marie Lewis was found unresponsive in a cell block at the Hilo police station at about 8:45 a.m.

Rescue crews were summoned but could not revive her.

Lewis was taken to the Hilo Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 11:10 a.m.

Lewis was arrested Tuesday night for two outstanding warrants issued for probation violation.  She had been unable to post $100,000 bail and was placed into a single occupancy cell.

Her death has been classified as an unattended death.

Police are conducting an investigation.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday to determine the exact cause of death.
