Chemical Spray Causes Students, Teachers to Fall Ill

WAIPAHU (KHNL) -- A noxious odor causes a number of students and teachers to fall ill at Saint Joseph School in Waipahu.

Hazmat crews with the Honolulu Fire Department rushed to the school Friday afternoon and treated those affected on campus.

It turns out the fumes came from malathion; an insecticide.

Witnesses say a gardener had been spraying the chemical which drifted onto the campus by the strong winds.
