Hanapepe Bridge Reopened

HANAPEPE (KHNL) -- The county-owned Hanapepe Bridge was reopened Friday morning after Public Works conducted an inspection.

Officials couldn't fully assess the extent of the damage until the flow of the Hanapepe River returned to normal.

"We did a visual inspection of the bridge and there is no evidence of structural damage," said Deputy County Engineer Ed Renaud, adding that the integrity of the bridge is sound.

The bridge was hit by a Matson container on Sunday when it floated down the Hanapepe River after rain flooded the area.

In December, a structural engineering consulting firm inspected the bridge and determined the bridge was sound and the 10-ton weight limit should remain unchanged.
