MAALAEA (KHNL) -- Construction begins on a fence at a known nesting ground for critically endangered hawksbill turtles.

The "Turtle Fence" will replace the existing temporary fence at Kealia that was installed ten years ago.

The new fence will extend about three-fourths of a mile.  It is to protect sea turtles from crawling onto the roadway and getting hit by motorists.

Anticipated completion is set for February 15.
