Man Accused of Ex-Girlfriend's Murder Held Without Bail

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- A man accused of beating a woman to death on a street in Kailua last month will be held without bail pending the outcome of his case.

Thirty-year-old Alapeti Tunoa is charged with murder, criminal property damage, terroristic threatening, assault and firearms offenses.

Investigators say he rammed his estranged girlfriend's car with his SUV, then beat her repeatedly with a shotgun. Twenty-nine-year-old Janel Tupuola was killed.

Tunoa's bail was originally set at $1 million. But on Tuesday, prosecutors successfully asked a judge to take away any chance of the suspect bailing out. They say he's a flight risk and a danger to the public.
