Nordstrom Tour Reveals Several Surprises

By Beth Hillyer

HONOLULU (KHNL)--You've likely driven past it, now is your first chance to take a look inside. The first Nordstrom department store in Hawaii is set to open in just over a month on March 7th. This store features lots of local touches and departments no mainland store has. Thursday, we got a behind the scenes tour.

It's been over 18 months in the making. Walking into the new Nordstrom is like stepping into a luxury hotel. Even without the merchandise, it's something to see.

Crews are putting finishing touches on the new Nordstrom located near the Ala Moana shopping center. Nordstrom started as a shoe store in the 1930's so the tour starts in the shoe department.

"We are really excited to open our first full line store here at Ala Moana March 7th at 9:30 am," said store manager Brian Tatsumura.

There are five shoe departments including women's, men and childrens. If you stacked all the shoe boxes on top of each other it would reach five miles high.

The store manager has been with the company for 34 years.

"I started off in the stock room and kinda worked my way up," said Tatsumura.

There are spa features including a nail salon and facial treatment rooms.

The jewelry department will feature some local designers

From ironing boards to these sewing machines, Nordstrom prides itself on it's point of difference. In this alteration center they can turn clothes around in just a day.

After a few hours of shopping you can recharge at one of two espresso bars.

Even the kids will like shopping. Here they can be properly fitted for shoes and enjoy an aquarium.

Not only is Nordstrom popular with shoppers, lots of people want to work there as well.

They had over 2,300 applications and those selected learn the entire store so someone who is assigned to the shoe department must also be knowledgeable about jewelry.
