HONOLULU (KHNL) -- Hawaii's Mormon community is remembering church president Gordon B. Hinckley.
Hinckley was the longest serving president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He died at the age of 97 on Sunday.
Mayor Mufi Hannemann issued the following statement on the passing of Hinckley.
"Gordon B. Hinckley, president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a friend of the people of Hawaii and the Pacific. I join the 49,000 Mormons throughout the state, and those across the globe, who will miss his leadership.
"All the heartfelt accolades and tributes we are hearing ring true. Having had the privilege of meeting him and enjoying his work, I know he brought humility, integrity, and strength to his enormous responsibilities. He was a strong supporter of the church's work in Hawaii, particularly in the Laie community, where I know his spiritual legacy will continue to live and benefit the members.
