WAIMANALO (KHNL) -- Honolulu police are on the hunt for three suspects, after a man walking in Waimanalo reports being kidnapped and assaulted.
Alika Winchester has been a proud Waimanalo resident for the past 38 years. He says the bad rap the sleepy town gets is unfair.
"If people may perceive this to be a bad neighborhood, it's not true," he said. "This is where people work and they live and they try their best."
So it disturbs him that a terrifying ordeal reportedly began right outside his house on Kaaiai Street.
A 22-year-old man told police he was walking home at about 10:45 Sunday night, when two strangers forced him into their truck.
"Everybody is going to be afraid that something may happen," Winchester said. "Every family here that has children are worried about their, you know, their children being affected."
The victim says the kidnappers drove him to Makai Research Pier on Kalanianaole Highway, where a third suspect came out of the bushes and beat him with a hammer.
Christine Sanders and her family are visiting the area from Pittsburgh.
"We actually came here to kind of check out the pier because we're scuba divers," she said. "I heard there's good shore diving here."
She says the violent case doesn't change the way she views Hawaii.
"I'm hoping that it's isolated," she said. "You know, I think that that's probably true."
Investigators say the injured man managed to run away and flag down a car. He was treated for bruises and cuts.
