Unexploded Ordnance Disposal on Molokini Island

MAUI (KHNL) -- The waters near Molokini Island will be off-limits later this month while the US Navy disposes of three pieces of unexploded ordnance.

Molokini is a small crescent shaped island in Maalaea Bay, about two and a half miles off the south coast of Maui.

The Navy found a 250-pound bomb, 105 millimeter projectile, and a 5-inch rocket during surveys there in December of 2006 and last March.

The Coast Guard will establish a one nautical mile safety zone while the Navy does its work.

That's expected to be on January 30th, for about 10 hours or so.

A public meeting to provide information about the disposal process and the temporary closure will be held on January 23 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary office in Kihei.
