New NOAA Maps Show Big Island Has Most Live Coral

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KHNL) -- The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration released new coral reef maps that show the Big Island has the largest percentage of live coral of the main Hawaiian islands.

NOAA says live coral covers 57% of the waters surrounding the Big Island.

Studies reveal young islands like the Big Island, generally have more live coral cover than older islands.

The NOAA mapping covers 506 square miles of ocean habitat on Hawaii, Kahoolawe, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, Niihau and Kaula.
