Big Island Teen Dies in Pedestrian Accident

PUNA, Big Island (KHNL) -- A 16-year-old Keaau boy died Friday in an early pedestrian accident on the Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) near the 8 mile-marker in Keaau.

Police say the victim, identified as Kaipo Sioloa, was crossing the highway at 12:12 AM when he was struck by a Toyota 4-door sedan driven by a 19-year-old man.

Police say Sioloa was not in a crosswalk.

Medics took the boy to the Hilo Medical Center where he later died.

The driver of the car was not hurt.

Police don't believe speed was a factor in the crash but they say the victim had been drinking before he was hit.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the first traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with none at this time last year.
