HONOLULU (KHNL) -- Many people looking to start off the new year with some good luck, paid a visit to a local Shinto Shrine Tuesday.

With the ringing of a bell and a blessing, many took part in this Japanese New Year ritual in hopes of attracting good fortune.

It's called "Hatsu-mode".

As they embrace the spirit of the Japanese New Year, they also welcome the Year of the Rat.

"I love the fact that you get an opportunity to begin again no matter what happened in that past year that new year comes, you just get to do it all over again. I love the simplicity of that," said visitor Dam Kimpel.

And to complete the celebration, they enjoyed hot bowls of Ozoni Mochi soup.
