HFD Urges Residents to Use Fireworks Safely

HONOLULU (KHNL) -- Ringing in the new year with fireworks is a popular island tradition.

But while you're celebrating with friends and family, the Honolulu Fire Department wants you to remember to use fireworks in a safe manner.

"It comes down to one thing, being responsible. Making sure that you supervise young people that use fireworks. Making sure that you use them appropriately in the right place and in the right manner," said Captain Terry Seelig, of the Honolulu Fire Department.

The number of firework permits issued so far this year, is down.

As of the close of business Thursday, 6,602 permits were sold, compared with 8,367 at the same time last year.
