Toys for Tots Campaign Well Short of Collection Goal

IWILEI (KHNL) -- It's the final push for this year's Toys for Tots campaign. Unfortunately, the organization which provides Christmas gifts for children in need is well short of its collection goal.

Volunteers spent the day sorting donations at the Toys for Tots warehouse in Iwilei. From board games to stuffed animals, the gifts will certainly bring smiles to kids' faces.

But organizers say they've gathered fewer than 30,000 toys during the campaign. The goal is twice that number, with Christmas right around the corner.

"I didn't realize that they were in that much trouble, and I haven't had a chance to do a whole lot this Christmas," Jim, a toy donor who didn't want to give his last name, said. "So I, I figured K-Mart was convenient. This drop off was convenient. And obviously, the kids are going to need it."

Kaiser Permanente and Castle and Cooke Hawaii are picking up the tab for the warehouse space.

Friday is the deadline for donations. You can drop off new, unwrapped toys at the Iwilei warehouse until 5 pm.
