HONOLULU (KHNL) -- The latest numbers indicate that in three years, one out-of every five people on Oahu will be 60 years of age, or older.

Those numbers also show many of Honolulu's seniors are on fixed incomes, and will probably spend the holiday season, alone.

''The population over all, in America, is aging and because of our lifespan here in Hawaii being a little bit longer than some other areas, our population is aging even more so," explained Judith Cantil of the Aloha United Way.

It's a question that prompted a fledgling island magazine to reach-out to the Aloha United Way: how to help those, who have always helped us?

One call led to another, and the next thing you know, a new program to help Honolulu's elderly-in-need, is born.

''It seem like most of the projects and charities around Christmas focus on the keiki and the homeless and the elderly are forgotten," said Live It Up! Magazine editor, Joanne Romero. "So, I think this is very important for their well-being, for them to go on for the rest of the year."

Project live it up! focuses on collecting your donations, tailored for our senior citizens.

Practical items, such as shampoo, wash cloths, and clocks with large numbers, are needed.

The donation drive ends Saturday.

So, you still have time to make a difference.

''The elderly do not get recognized enough," says project assistant, Mike Hirano. "They've given us so much. They are our kupuna. They are who we owe almost everything to."

''The opportunity to reach out to these people and to let them know they are not forgotten by the community is just really essential," says Cantil.
