HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui (KHNL) -- Last week's severe winter storm caused extensive damage to the Haleakala National Park summit area.

Wind gusts of 80 mph tore roofing off of the summit observation building.

Rain flooded the Sliding Sands Trail and destroyed the pathway.

Park maintenance officials say the trail damage was extensive.

Sliding Sands will remain closed due to safety concerns.

Crews are assessing the wilderness cabins for damage.
