HONOLULU (KHNL) -- Lt. Governor James "Duke" Aiona called for a constitutional convention Tuesday to allow Hawaii residents to become more directly involved in state government.

Aiona says residents should have the opportunity to voice their opinion and be more directly involved in putting forward the decisions that govern them.

Aiona submitted a letter to the Office of Elections, asking to put the issue on the statewide ballot for the 2008 General Election.

The last constitutional convention in Hawaii was held nearly 30 years ago.

Aiona says a vote on whether to hold a convention is supposed to be held every nine years.
