Safety Tips During Power Outage

(KHNL) -- A Safety Alert, Hawaiian Electric Company issued the following safety tips during a power outage:

Anyone who is without power and who is dependent on electric powered life support medical equipment should make arrangements to go to a hospital or alternate location with power.

Do not touch fallen or low hanging wires, nor anything they may be in contact with.

Don't assume you can tell the difference between power, cable and telephone lines.  Assemblingly harmless wires may still be energized.

Stay clear of puddles where downlines may have landed.

Turn off and unplug unnecessary equipment, especially sensitive electronics like computers.

If your power is out, keep the refrigerator and freezer closed.  Cold air will keep food fresh for a long time if the doors stayed closed.
