HONOLULU (KHNL) -- There are just 40 shopping days left until Christmas.
Time to get started!
And for those of you who are about to hit the mall rush, we have this Safety Alert on how to make sure your holiday shopping is enjoyable and safe.
The Christmas decorations have been up for a while. But now's the time when the actual shopping picks up.
Folks will be excited. And rushed.
That's exactly when we all need to be a little more careful.
''First and foremost, is to watch out for your children. Watch out for the keiki because they're running around the shopping center and they're so excited," said Carol Pregill.
Pregill is the president of Retail Merchants of Hawaii.
Now that we've taken care of the family, it's time to protect your Christmas cash.
''ATM machines. That's another concern. It's tempting. You see something you want. You run to the ATM machine and there's nobody around. Or, there is someone around. Be aware of who's watching you."
And protect you credit cards with the same level of energy. Problems created by identity theft are well documented.
Pregill says, most folks use common sense when it comes to hiding their gifts from view in their parked cars, and that women do a nice job of parking their vehicles close to the mall.
But she points out, if you do feel a bit nervous during the late-night shopping hours, do not hesitate to ask mall security for assitance.
''The availability of security in the malls has increased dramatically, particularly during the holidays. The music is playing and you're walking around and the most important thing is to be aware. People are busy, walking around. You never know what's going to happen."
