House Passes Legislation to Redeploy Troops from Iraq

(Congress of the U.S. press release)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KHNL) -- U.S. troops serving in Iraq are one step closer to returning home.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Orderly and Responsible Iraq Redeployment Appropriations Act Wednesday.

The act requires redeployment of U.S. troops to begin within 30 days of enactment.  The goal to complete redeployment is by December 15, 2008.

The House denied President Bush approval for the $200 billion he requested to continue the war, instead providing $50 billion to meet the immediate needs of U.S. troops and aid their redeployment.

The legislation now faces challenges in the Senate, whose rules allow the Republican to block it with a filibuster.  President Bush also threatened to veto the bill.
