Photovoltaic System to Be Installed at Lihue Civic Center

LIHUE (KHNL) - A new system designed to conserve energy will be installed on the roof of the Piikoi Building at the Lihue Civic Center.

Officials say the county recently signed a 20-year purchase power agreement with SunEdison.  In the agreement, the solar energy company will install and maintain a 72kW CA photovoltaic system.

Mayor Bryan Baptiste says "the county will pay a lower fixed price for electricity that's not tied to volatile oil prices."

The PV system is expected to save more than $18,000 in its first year of operation, based on the rate of $0.195 per kWH for PV power versus $0.33 per kWH paid to Kauai Island Utility Cooperative.
